At Helen Hayes Hospital, we know that the road to recovery starts long before a patient reaches our front door. It begins with the peace of mind that comes from a referral and admission process that’s remarkably simple and seamless, so you are ensured of access to one of the country’s best physical rehab centers.
The Helen Hayes Hospital Admission Center is designed with that in mind. It is staffed by registered nurses and a support team that understands the sensitive nature of this transition. They respond to each case individually and do everything possible to ensure a smooth and timely discharge from the acute care hospital to Helen Hayes–one of the first and best physical rehabilitation hospitals in the country.
Helen Hayes Hospital, in West Haverstraw, New York, is a physical rehabilitation center of excellence that treats patients who have sustained stroke, spinal cord injury or brain injury (including patients in coma or on ventilator support), aneurysm, cardiac and pulmonary disorders, neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Guillian Barr Syndrome and Parkinson’s Disease, amputation, joint replacement, fracture and other orthopedic conditions. Rehabilitation programs are for individuals 16 years of age and older, although exceptions may be made for younger patients with spinal cord or brain injury.
The majority of patients are transferred directly from an acute care hospital. If an individual is not referred from an acute care hospital, he or she may still be considered for inpatient admission if they have a need for close medical management and an intensive, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program. Individuals who are not currently in a hospital but who, on physician advice would like to be considered for admission, should schedule an evaluation with a Helen Hayes Hospital staff physician by calling 845-786-4097. Every referral is given our closest consideration and every admission decision is made on a case-by-case basis.
Located in New York’s Hudson Valley, Helen Hayes Hospital serves patients from throughout the New York Metropolitan region, New Jersey and Connecticut, and also attracts patients from across the country.
Referring A Patient
Our Clinical Liaisons may meet with patients and families where patients are currently treated in order to answer questions, review a patient’s history and allay any concerns.
Although a referral from a healthcare professional is required, we welcome patient and family inquires. Referrals are accepted from physicians, case managers and discharge planners electronically and via phone or fax. For convenience, we admit patients seven days a week throughout the year. In order to process referrals without delay, we request the following information be provided by the referring healthcare facility.
- Patient identification, demographics, insurance information
- Physician history & physical
- Medication list
- Recent chart notes (particularly therapy related notes)
- Anticipated date of discharge and transfer
Helen Hayes Hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid and worker’s compensation and participates in most traditional and managed care private insurance plans. We suggest you contact your carrier should you have any questions or concerns. Our Admission Center will verify insurance coverage prior to admission. We will work with your insurer to guarantee the greatest degree of coverage while ensuring the best possible outcome. During the stay, the case manager will keep the patient/family informed of coverage.
Helen Hayes Hospital encourages prospective patients, families and healthcare professionals to tour the facility. The personal tour provides the opportunity to view patient rooms, treatment areas, the array of sophisticated therapeutic equipment and to meet the treatment team members who will be caring for the patient.
