HHH Dental Medicine Service Available to Individual with Physical & Neurological Disabilities

Since 1957, the Department of Dental Medicine at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, NY has provided a full repertoire of dental care to children and adults with physical, neurological and psychiatric disabilities. Today, the Dental Medicine Service prides itself on offering expert and compassionate care to over 4,000 patients yearly with Parkinson’s Disease, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, seizures, dementia and other conditions that can make for the most challenging of dental cases.

From routine cleanings to complex dental procedures performed under anesthesia in the hospital’s specialized surgical suite, the dedicated team of dentists, hygienists and assistants at HHH is uniquely experienced at providing comprehensive, comfortable, and safe care for patients with disabilities. The dental facilities are accessible to individuals using wheelchairs, stretchers and other medical devices, and dentists holding academic appointments at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine are on-call 24 hours daily. Additionally, patients’ family members and caregivers are encouraged to work closely with the dental team to ensure a positive treatment experience.

Since 1987, the Department of Dental Medicine has also served as a training center for dental professionals interested in obtaining the skills to work with individuals with disabilities. In 2013, the department added an ADA accredited general practice residency which accepts three dentists per year,
