Helen Hayes Hospital Offers First Off-Roading Event With Northeast Off-Road Adventure August 28th

The Helen Hayes Hospital Adapted Sports and Recreation Program will offer its first off-roading event in collaboration with Northeast Off-Road Adventures on Wednesday, August 28, 2019 from 10:00am-3:00pm. The Adaptive Adventures Sampler Class will be held at NORA’s Ellenville campus at 23 Tempaloni Rd and will offer 5 hours of accessible off-road activities for individuals who require the use of a wheelchair.

Program participants will gain access to up to four off-road activities over the course of the day. Each 50-minute activity will give participants the opportunity to enjoy multiple recreational opportunities on NORA’s 75-acre campus, including woodland trail rides using all-terrain wheelchairs, guided jeep rides through rugged terrain, and marksmanship practice at NORA’s airsoft range. Activities will include:

  • Grit Freedom Chair Woodland Ride: Gain hands-on experience operating Grit’s all-terrain manual wheelchair through a flagged course and woodland trail ride.
  • Action Track Chair Woodland Ride: Gain hands-on experience operating Action Track Chair’s all-terrain powered wheelchair with tracks through a flagged course and woodland trail ride.
  • Off-Road Ride-a-Long:Ride along with a NORA guide in a specially-adapted Jeep through a natural terrain trail network that includes steep uphills, downhills, rocks, and ledges.
  • Airsoft Marksmanship:Practice marksmanship skills at NORA’s airsoft range under the supervision of NORA staff. Equipment and targets are provided and a safety briefing is included.

The Adaptive Adventure Sampler Class is $65 per participant using coupon code HHH2019. Program participants should have sufficient upper body strength and trunk control to navigate and use a wheelchair for some of the activities. Lunch and one able-bodied guest are included per participant. Up to two additional guests may be added for $50 each.
