Prosthetics & Orthotics Center

On-Site Evaluation, Fabrication, & Customization

The Prosthetic Orthotic Center specializes in providing a full range of prosthetic and orthotic services, including evaluation, fabrication and follow-up care, with the goal of ensuring accuracy, safety, comfort, and appropriateness of devices. The Center is the most comprehensive facility in the New York Metropolitan/Hudson Valley region. Its ability to custom design and fabricate a wide variety of devices for both adults and children, while offering personalized attention to individual needs, is what has drawn patients from the tri-state area, and around the world.

The Prosthetic Orthotic Center’s office and fabrication facility is located in a dedicated, 7,000 square foot space within Helen Hayes Hospital. The Center is fully accessible and is served by state-of-the-art technology. All prosthetic and orthotic devices are designed and fitted on-site utilizing the most appropriate materials, techniques, and technology to meet a patient’s needs.

Our Staff

The Center is fully staffed by a team of ABC (American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics) prosthetists and orthotists, who, together with staff technicians have extensive experience working with both adult and pediatric patients. Staff members pursue ongoing training in the most advanced technology, including microprocessor controlled prosthetics, functional electrical stimulation devices, scoliosis, lightweight graphite systems, and silicone suction suspension.

Who We Help

The need for a prosthetic or orthotic device may arise from a traumatic injury, congenital condition, or disabling illness. The staff at the Prosthetic Orthotic Center have helped individuals with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal bifida, and scoliosis, as well as those with spinal cord injuries or amputations. The Center also specializes in meeting the needs of competitive athletes.

Our Services

The Prosthetic Orthotic Center prides itself on the personalized attention, expert consulting and diagnostic services, technical expertise, and timely delivery it provides to every patient. Drawing on the unparalleled depth and range of services available within the hospital, the Center is well equipped to deal with complex and challenging cases.

Staff pay close attention to an individual’s lifestyle needs, including recreational and work demands. Specialized devices can be constructed for such activities as running, golfing, and competitive sports.

The staff work personally with every patient to check the fit and comfort of every device. Only when the fit is deemed accurate, comfortable and acceptable to the patient is it released for use. In addition, the patient and any necessary family members are educated in the proper use and care of the prosthesis or orthosis. The staff is accessible for follow-up care, including any adjustments and modifications that may be necessary.
