WEST HAVERSTRAW, NY (December 5, 2025) – The New York State Department of Health’s Helen Hayes Hospital proudly celebrates its 125th anniversary, marking more than a century of innovation, hope, and patient-centered physical rehabilitation.
Established by an Act of New York State Governor Theodore Roosevelt on April 11, 1900, the hospital opened its doors to its first four pediatric patients on December 5, 1900 in a cottage on Tarrytown’s Augell estate. Known then as the New York State Hospital for the Care of Crippled and Deformed Children, it was one of the nation’s earliest institutions—and is believed to be the first state-owned hospital—dedicated to caring for children with physical disabilities. The hospital’s mission was rooted in compassion, expertise, and the belief that every child deserved the opportunity to heal and thrive.
Growing demand, driven in part by the prevalence of tuberculosis of the bone and joint, prompted the hospital’s relocation in April 1905 to its current home in West Haverstraw. The hospital continued to expand its expertise and services through the decades. Polio became a major source of admissions during the epidemics of the 1920s and beyond. In 1945, during World War II, age restrictions were lifted and the hospital admitted its first adult patients. In 1944, actress and humanitarian Helen Hayes MacArthur joined the hospital’s Board of Visitors, and in 1974, the hospital was renamed in her honor in recognition of her decades of advocacy and philanthropic support.
Today, Helen Hayes Hospital has evolved into a nationally recognized leader in physical rehabilitation, serving patients of all ages recovering from debilitating injuries and illnesses, including stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, cardiac conditions, orthopedic injuries, and complex surgeries. The hospital has earned numerous distinctions, including 5-star CMS ratings, U.S. News & World Report “Best Nursing Home – Short-Term Rehab” designation, and Castle Connolly Top Doctor recognition. The hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission, affiliated with the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System, and a member of the Montefiore Einstein SNF Collaborative.
“I am thrilled to recognize the Department of Health’s Helen Hayes Hospital for 125 years of service,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “I commend the staff at Helen Hayes for the outstanding care they have provided to patients over the years, and look forward to celebrating many more milestones ahead.”
“For 125 years, Helen Hayes Hospital has been a place of recovery, resilience, and inspirational progress,” said Helen Hayes Hospital CEO Scott Guevin. “Our legacy is built on the dedication of generations of clinicians, staff, and partners who have advanced the field of rehabilitation and changed countless lives. We are grateful for these extraordinary individuals, as well as for the remarkable patients who have put every ounce of their hope and determination into regaining their maximum mobility and independence.”
Throughout 2025, the hospital has commemorated this historic milestone with special events, including the celebration of its 125th annual Honors Assembly recognizing patient achievement, historical displays, and the planned screening of a rare archival film about the hospital narrated by Helen Hayes MacArthur. These celebrations honor the hospital’s distinguished history and reaffirm its ongoing commitment to providing innovative, compassionate care that empowers patients to achieve their highest level of independence and return to active, fulfilling lives.
