WEST HAVERSTRAW, NY (November 19, 2025) – The Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) and Transitional Care Unit (TCU) at the New York State Department of Health’s Helen Hayes Hospital were recognized as Best Nursing Homes for 2026 by consumer rankings leader U.S. News & World Report on November 13, earning the publication’s highest ranking of “High Performing” in the field of short-term rehabilitation. Both units earned an overall rating of “5 out of 5” and a short-term rehabilitation rating of “3 out of 3 – High Performing,” acknowledging the services as premier providers of post-acute care for patients recovering from stroke, heart attack, orthopedic surgery, and other debilitating conditions.
U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Nursing Home rankings aim to help patients and families make informed decisions about short-term or long-term nursing home care. This year, the organization evaluated more than 15,000 care providers—focusing on patient outcomes, safety, staffing, infection rate, and processes of care—with fewer than 19% attaining Best Nursing Home recognition. Helen Hayes Hospital’s SNF and TCU have consistently achieved this elite designation over the years, receiving top scores across all categories.
“I commend the level of commitment to patients’ wellbeing demonstrated by the Skilled Nursing Facility and Transitional Care Unit staff at Helen Hayes Hospital,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “This ranking recognizes the dedicated team of professionals at Helen Hayes who are able to provide exceptional rehabilitation services while maintaining the highest standard of quality and safety.”
“This honor reflects the exceptional outcomes our teams achieve through their expertise, compassion, and focus on each patient’s individual goals,” said Scott Guevin, CEO of Helen Hayes Hospital. “Our Skilled Nursing Facility and Transitional Care Unit exemplify the very best in post-acute rehabilitation—helping patients recover safely, regain independence, and return home stronger.”
Helen Hayes Hospital’s SNF and TCU services provide inpatient subacute rehabilitation for individuals who can benefit from comprehensive rehab, with the goal of returning home at an improved level of function and mobility. The programs are well suited for those recovering from hip or knee replacement surgery, fractures, stroke, orthopedic or neurological conditions, exacerbation of chronic illness, medical deconditioning, and more.
Admissions to the SNF and TCU Units are made directly from an acute care hospital. Individuals who are interested in admission and additional information may contact the Hospital’s Admission Referral Center at 845-786-4118.
