Supporting Health Equity: Helen Hayes Hospital in Action

October 30, 2025

At Helen Hayes Hospital, we are committed to reducing health disparities and empowering individuals in our community to live a healthier, more independent life. This summer, we proudly hosted two key initiatives aimed at expanding access to resources and addressing community needs.

On June 7th, we welcomed nearly 100 patients, caregivers, and community members to our Adapted Sports, Recreation, & Living Expo, held in partnership with the Hudson Valley Chapter of the United Spinal Association. This free event showcased adaptive sports equipment, inclusive recreation programs, assistive technologies, and accessible travel services. The program connected attendees with tools and support that promote independence and well-being, especially for people with disabilities and older adults.

“This event brought our mission to life,” said HHH Chief Administrative Officer Yvonne Evans. “It was inspiring to see people trying new things, making connections, and discovering what’s possible.”

At the same time, our dedicated hospital staff united to address another urgent issue impacting our community: food insecurity—a critical social determinant of health. Through our summer food drive benefiting the Feeding Body & Soul Food Pantry in West Haverstraw, we collected and donated a generous supply of food to support local families in need. Limited access to nutritious food can lead to chronic health conditions and widen existing health disparities. By tackling hunger, we’re helping to promote better health outcomes and greater equity in our community. We extend a special thank you to CSEA for their generous support and direct contributions to the pantry. We are proud to now host food drives twice a year—an ongoing effort to help fight hunger and support our most vulnerable neighbors.

To advance our mission and strengthen our commitment to health equity, Helen Hayes Hospital aligns with national standards set by The Joint Commission, which emphasize the need to reduce health disparities and improve outcomes for all patients. As an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF), we are uniquely positioned to provide inclusive, patient-centered care that supports individuals from all backgrounds in achieving optimal recovery and independence. As part of this effort, we have implemented an initiative to connect patients who do not have a Primary Care Provider with a provider prior to discharge, promoting continuity of care and supporting long-term health and wellness.

Health disparities frequently result in underserved populations having limited access to the resources needed to effectively manage chronic health conditions, obtain rehabilitation services, or navigate complex healthcare systems. To help address these gaps, we offer several free, inclusive, and accessible support groups tailored to diverse populations—including those affected by osteoporosis, stroke, caregiving, and more. Through these programs, we strive to level the playing field by providing individuals with the knowledge, tools, and community connections essential for their well-being and success.

Whether it’s through rehabilitation services, community education, inclusive events, or outreach programs, Helen Hayes Hospital is committed to making care more accessible and to helping everyone live a healthier, more independent life.
