The Helen Hayes Hospital Wellness Center is a professionally supervised exercise facility dedicated to promoting lifelong fitness. The Center offers an ideal, fully accessible setting for a structured wellness program. Applications are accepted from individuals who have any type of medical diagnosis, including but not limited to
- cardiac disorders
- pulmonary disorders
- orthopedic disorders
- spinal cord injury
- brain injury
- multiple sclerosis
The goal is for community participants to continue building endurance, strength and flexibility and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. Although many participants have previously received therapy at the hospital, the program does not require that participants have had any type of therapy or treatment at Helen Hayes Hospital.
Exercise programs are developed jointly by instructors and participants and are dependent on the individual’s medical condition, goals and fitness level. All members receive a thorough orientation that encompasses both the mechanics of the equipment and specific usage instructions tailored to meet their particular physical needs. All exercise sessions are supervised by Certified Recreational Therapy Specialists and a personal trainer is available to consult on the development of a customized exercise program.
The Wellness Center houses a complete range of aerobic and weight training equipment for people of all abilities, including treadmills, stair steppers, stationary and recumbent cycles, ellipticals and upper body cycles. There is equipment designed specifically for wheelchair users as well as adaptive devices to assist those with limited dexterity.
