New York State Department of Health’s Helen Hayes Hospital Reopens Accessible Aquatic Facility
January 13, 2025Warm Water Pool Supports Healing, Physical Function and Overall Wellbeing
New York State Department of Health’s Helen Hayes Hospital is thrilled to announce the reopening of its fully accessible aquatic therapy and wellness pool, which had been temporarily closed following the COVID pandemic. As of January 6, the Hospital will offer a variety of programs to reintroduce the community to the benefits of aquatic therapy and exercise, including aquatic wellness classes, individual and small group training, and therapy designed to promote healing, strength, and overall wellbeing.
“Aquatic programs improve mental health, cardiovascular health, and muscle development and provide pain relief that can help reduce stress,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “The reopening of the New York State Department of Health’s Helen Hayes aquatic therapy pool will give the community more access to programs and classes to help them heal and strengthen physically.”
Aquatic therapy and exercise have long been shown to alleviate pain and increase flexibility, strength, and balance by reducing the effects of gravity on the body. Immersion in the Hospital’s warm water pool, maintained at 92-94°F, allows participants to engage in low-impact movements that often aren’t possible on land, making it an ideal environment for those with arthritis, joint replacements, back pain, and neurological conditions. The pool features hydraulic lifts, bilateral railings, and a flat floor of variable depths to ensure universal accessibility for individuals of all abilities and needs.
“The reopening of our pool is a highly anticipated moment for our hospital and the community we serve,” said Yvonne Evans, Acting CEO of Helen Hayes Hospital. “For many years, our aquatic programs have supported our participants in improving mobility, relieving stress, and enhancing overall health. We’re excited to once again provide this valuable resource and share the physical and mental health benefits of water-based therapy and exercise.”
