Celebrating National Therapeutic Recreation Month

February 11, 2020
The Therapeutic Recreational Department Staff at Helen Hayes Hospital

February is National Therapeutic Recreation Month and it is the perfect time to recognize the many benefits of recreational therapy and the incredible work that Helen Hayes Hospital’s Therapeutic Recreation Department does each day.

Recreational Therapy employs recreational activities to improve the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social health of individuals with disabling conditions or illnesses. These activities aim to reduce stress and anxiety, build confidence, and increase socialization, as well as improve motor skills and reasoning abilities.

Our Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRSs) work closely with patients to find their current leisure interests and help them find ways to continue to actively participate in what they enjoy doing. They also help our patients explore new leisure opportunities that might be of interest to them. Patients can participate in a wide array of activities, including adaptive video gaming, pet therapy, a performing arts program, our 4-season Adapted Sports & Recreation program, and other group leisure activities offered throughout the week. Many of these activities are offered for both inpatients and outpatients, as well as to members of the community.

Please join us in celebrating the importance of Therapeutic Recreation for our patients and thanking our dedicated Therapeutic Recreation Department for the important role they play in the lives of our patients and our community.
