Fall Prevention – Staying Safe at Home

September 23, 2013

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of adults in the United States over the age of 65 fall each year. In recognition of Fall Prevention Awareness Day which was this past Sunday, September 22, the therapy staff at Helen Hayes Hospital is urging older adults to take a moment to check their homes to identify and fix possible fall hazards.

Some simple ways to make your home safer are:
• To remove or secure loose rugs.
• Make sure electrical cords are not exposed.
• Install handrails on stairs.
• Make sure walking spaces are free from clutter.
• Keep frequently used items in cabinets that are easy to reach,
• Have adequate lighting to the bathroom at night.
• Install grab bars in the shower or tub.
• Wear proper footwear indoors and outdoors.

In addition to making your home safer, have your healthcare provider check your medications, have your vision checked, and stay active and fit. Remember, safety does not happen by accident!
