Hands-On Assistive Technology Workshops Scheduled for Spring
February 10, 2012The Arnold Goldman Center for Assistive Technology at Helen Hayes Hospital is offering a series of free workshops focusing on an array of assistive technology products and services. Such technology enables individuals with physical disabilities to function at a higher level of independence.
All programs will take place at the physical rehabilitation hospital in West Haverstraw from 3:00- 5:00 p.m. The workshop schedule is as follows:
March 22: Wheelchair Users Can Sit for Le$$
Explore the more than 150 samples of wheelchair cushions and backs of varying contour, size and material. Learn about the latest general use seat and back cushions from our Seating & Mobility experts.
April 19: Control it All With Your Voice
We live in a multi-tasking world with increasing hands-free electronic options. Come and learn how to control your computer, phone, iPad or tablet, and even appliances, by voice.
May 22: Get Off Your Bony Butt
Pressure mapping can identify dangerous “hot spots” for people who sit for prolonged periods. Pressure-reducing wheelchair cushions can help preserve skin integrity & circulatory health.
June 19: The Tablet Revolution – Apps for Everything
Tablets are with us everywhere: the classroom, workplace, coffee shop, park, car and at home. iPad, Android and Windows Tablet Apps for people with disabilities can enhance communication, control and learning.
“The Arnold Goldman Center for Assistive Technology is filled with some very high tech and specialized devices, and these workshops will be a great opportunity for people to familiarize themselves with what is out there,” explains Debra Zeitlin, Director of the Center. The free workshops are open to patients, healthcare and education professionals who work with individuals with disabilities, and individuals with disabilities who may use or be interested in using such devices.
The Center is open on the first Monday of every month from 3:00 to 6:00 pm for individuals to visit, view and try out the technology on display.
