Hospital to Host Adapted Water Sports Events

May 21, 2010

The Helen Hayes Hospital Adapted Sports & Recreation Program will host several water sports events this spring and summer. All programs are specially adapted to accommodate the varying needs of individuals with physical disabilities.

A Water Ski Clinic will take place on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Twin Lakes in Monroe, New York. The event is being produced in conjunction with Leaps of Faith Disabled Water Ski Club. No prior experience is required and all equipment will be provided. In case of rain, the program will take place on Sunday, June 20.

An Adapted Rowing Program will take place on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Congers Lake in Congers, New York. Members of Nyack’s River Rowing Association will join hospital staff in providing an introduction to rowing, a sport which builds endurance and strength. Boats and adaptive equipment will be available. In case of rain, the program will take place on Sunday July 11.

Kayak outings are planned for Thursday July 22 and Thursday August 19, 2010. The Adapted Sports & Rec Program will provide the kayaks and adapted seating, as required. Beginners are welcome.

All programs are free of charge, but pre-registration is required. To register, contact Matthew Castelluccio, Adapted Sports Coordinator at 845-786-4950, or castellucciom@helenhayeshosp.org.
