Hospital Schedules Workshops in Assistive Technology

The Arnold Goldman Center for Assistive Technology at Helen Hayes Hospital is offering a series of free workshops focusing on an array of assistive technology products and services. Such technology enables individuals with physical disabilities to function at a higher level of independence.

All programs will take place at the physical rehabilitation hospital in West Haverstraw from 3:30- 4:15 p.m. The Center will be open from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. on the day of each event so that participants may view and try out the array of assistive technology on display. The workshop schedule is as follows:

March 7: Make Your Computer Obey! Speak to your computer – Voice Recognition Technology

April 4: My Wheelchair is a Big Mouse! Learn how power wheelchairs can now control computers, TV, lights, doors and more

May 2: Eye Confusion – Too Many Choices? Eye Gaze Augmentative Communication System comparison: EyeMax – CEye – P10 – EyeGaze LC – EyeTech Digital

June 6: Your Computer is Your ECU – Cost effective solutions to use your existing laptop to control TV and appliances

July 11: The i revolution: iPad, iTouch, iPhone.. for communication, education, access.

September 12: What’s New in Augmentative Communication? Review all the new advances in Augmentative Communication Technology including the latest research in Brain Computer Interface (BCI)

“The Arnold Goldman Center for Assistive Technology is filled with some very high tech and specialized devices, and these workshops will be a great opportunity for people to familiarize themselves with what is out there,” explains Debra Zeitlin, Director of the Center. The free workshops are open to patients, healthcare and education professionals who work with individuals with disabilities, and individuals with disabilities who may use or be interested in using such devices.
