NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH’S HELEN HAYES HOSPITAL’S SUBACUTE NURSING FACILITY AND TRANSITIONAL CARE UNIT RANKED BEST NURSING HOMES BY U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Hospital Once Again Distinguishes Itself as a Leader in Physical Rehabilitation

The Subacute Nursing Facility (SNF) and Transitional Care Unit (TCU) at the New York State Department of Health’s Helen Hayes Hospital were recognized as Best Nursing Homes for 2025 by consumer rankings leader U.S. News & World Report on November 12, with a special designation of “high performing” in the field of short-term rehabilitation. Both units earned an overall rating of “5 out of 5” and a short-term rehabilitation rating of “3 out of 3 – High Performing,” acknowledging the services as premier providers of post-acute care for patients recovering from stroke, heart attack, orthopedic surgery, and other debilitating conditions.

U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Nursing Home rankings aim to help patients and families make informed decisions about short-term or long-term nursing home care. This year, the organization evaluated more than 15,000 care providers—focusing on patient outcomes, safety, staffing, infection rate, and processes of care—with fewer than 20% attaining Best Nursing Home recognition. Helen Hayes Hospital’s SNF and TCU have repeatedly achieved this elite designation over the years, receiving top scores across all categories.

“This recognition by U.S. News & World Report acknowledges the outstanding level of compassionate care demonstrated by the Subacute Nursing Facility and Transitional Care Unit staff at Helen Hayes Hospital,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “Helen Hayes Hospital is a special place that uniquely blends compassion, kindness and patient empowerment that transcends medicine. We are fortunate to have Helen Hayes as an important part of the Department of Health.”

“We are deeply honored to once again be named among the Best Nursing Homes in the nation by U.S. News & World Report,” said Yvonne Evans, Acting CEO of Helen Hayes Hospital. “This recognition underscores the dedication and expertise of our staff, who work tirelessly to provide the highest quality care and support to our patients and their families. Our goal is to help patients recover and regain independence as they transition from hospital to home, and this designation affirms our ongoing commitment to excellence in rehabilitation and post-acute care.”

Helen Hayes Hospital’s SNF and TCU services provide inpatient subacute rehabilitation for individuals who can benefit from comprehensive rehab, with the goal of returning home at an improved level of function and mobility. The programs are well suited for those recovering from hip or knee replacement surgery, fractures, stroke, orthopedic or neurological conditions, exacerbation of chronic illness, medical deconditioning, and more.

Admissions to the SNF and TCU Units are made directly from an acute care hospital. Individuals who are interested in admission and additional information may contact the Hospital’s Admission Referral Center at 845-786-4118.
